Just wondering how come these never get mentioned as good starter monitors? From what I've read they stay pretty small with great colors and look.

Been wanting one since I saw a 3 foot specimen at a LPS. I just love their intelligent look, reminds me alot of the Raptors from Jurassic park and their almost all black coloring.

Well since they get 4-5 feet long I would not recommend it for a begginer. Their cage would need to be huge. The one I was with was very nice and calm but that may have been because it was very over weight. Thats another thing, proper food for monitors are very expensive when you need alot.

A nice species, but i dont know whether they would be a suitable beginner species. Do you have much experience with reptiles particularly lizards.

The only reptile I have kept so far was a leopard gecko a few years back besides the two Diamondback Terrapins I have now. I'm not planning on getting it anytime soon, will have to get it thru the GF as she already gave in to let me keep Tarantulas and a breeding colony of Lobster roaches, she hates/scared of them. I remember her saying if any of the roaches or Tarantulas ever get loose, they're going SPLAT!!! and so will I:ROFL:   Either a Black roughneck as I don't find other monitors too interesting or Citrus Bearded Dragon:drool: once I do decide and get approval for a reptile:grinno:
