Im thinking about adding black Silica sand to my 120g RBP tank. First link i clicked on had sand for sale in 25lb bags for 1.65 free shipping, so im posting here to find out if this is a good deal. I dont know if it would be ok for my tank or not. If anyone has a good site for sand and decore that isnt overly costly, hook me up. http://www.sandsationalsparkle.com/unity-sand-ceremony-colored-sand-black-25 thanks guys

As far as the color (black) I think it will make your RBP's really stand out and look great. I'm not sure if it's ok to use silica sand. I have heard different things about it but being as your RBP's don't dig or bury themselves, I don't see why it would be an issue.

For $1.65/25lbs that would be a good deal. However, that link is misleading the way it's advertised. It's $1.65/1lb and you have to order in 25lb quantities.

I seen that to, but lol'ed a little. With a 120g tank im sure 25lb packs wouldnt make a bit of dif. Tryin to think how deep i want it and how much ill need. I KNOW i dont want it so deep to make air pockets, so im thinkin 100lb might be enough to cover the bottom. If i go this way ill prob just do 25lb at a time, see how it looks. I love the free shipping. Anyone have ideas for decore to use in there?

Here's another link I just found that I had bookmarked. Maybe you want to give them a call. http://ntruddockcompany.thomasnet.com/viewitems/fish-tank/spectraquartz?&bc=100|1042&forward=1

I like the look of dark substrate and am hoping to do that in some upcoming tanks, including a 125g. I think 100lb would probably do it, but I might go more because I like a thick layer of substrate. You might want to check out local pool building places and abrasive blasting places to see if they can order it for you. It might be a little more expensive per bag, but you'll save on shipping costs.

not trying to steal your thread but was just wondering if anyone knew where i could get red sand? like dirt cheap? im a college student so that kinda gives you an idea of the money im working with. Also i've been looking into ways to maybe dye play sand is there any cheap safe way to do this?

Follow that link I posted above. I also know in the past there's been talk about using that stuff Crayola makes, but IIRC the verdict was it was not fish safe.

you can get some really nice black sand at petsmart for 25 dollars per 25 lb bag. im sorry i forgot the name...tahitian moon sand or something. i use the black in my 29 gallon tank. fyi...it seems to me that a very dark substrate will make the fish much darker...idk if theyre trying to blend in with it or what. i have black gravel in my jags tank and hes almost always solid black :(

Here's another link that can help you determine how many pounds you might need: http://boonedocks.net/fishtank/ftweb.php

Funny thing: I work at petsmart and i know EXACTLY what your talking about, i just busted a bag of that stuff open. It fell from the top shelf and broke on the ground. We have 2 black bags and i had scanned them and it came up as 25. The color looks amazeing, simply amazeing. I dont think 50lb will be enough for my tank tho... As for the color darkening, there pretty dark now but the tank needs to be worked on, to bare. I really think i might grab up those 2 bags. I wouldnt go with a deep layer for the reason i stated above, but i wouldnt want to coat the tank and than them thrash around and end up seeing glass again. Ill have to post some pics when i get it all finished. Thanks for all the replys.
