I am looking for a good amount of black sand or natural substrate for my 480 Gallon aquarium. If anyone around Milwaukee,WI area has any for sale or know where I can get some for a good deal, please let me know. Thank You for your time and God Bless!!! :)

If they have it in stock, try some play sand from your local hardware store. I had a member tell me about using play sand as a substrate, and I have it in almost all of my tanks.

I am not sure what other colors play sand comes in, but I have personally seen it in white, tan/cream, and black.

You get typically get a 50lb. bag of play sand for around $2.00 - $3.50.

http://www.lowes.com:80/Concrete-Ce...ts/Sand/_/N-1z11pty/pl?UserSearch=sand&rpp=16 ( enter your city, state and then hit change store) It should bring you up a list of what the store has in stock, and also the current prices.

The water will be very cloudy at first, but within a few days it will turn back crystal clear.

BTW: Love your avatar ... : )

What kind of fish are you stocking?
Also be careful I read somewhere that some play sand is treated with anti bacterial stuff. I used crushed garnet in my tank and it is a beautiful deep red speckled with black. It is completely inert, very heavy, and looks natural. It is pretty rough so I may irritate the gills of Geos or other sand siffters. Which is why I asked after the stock you have planned.
excuse the typos sent from my Droid Inc2

check out home depot or menards (not sure if you have them up there) for "black beauty", its a coal slag that they use for sand blasting. its cheap too, $8 for 50lbs. if not and you want to use something like estes color quartz, youd have to travel down to wheeling, il to pick up a few bags.

BTW id reccommend "pool filter sand" over play sand anyday. play sand if very small and can cloud easily and get into filters and do some real damage. pool filter sand wont do that and IMO looks a lot better and more natural
