I have a 20gl long with Petco black sand. Problem is this sand is getting in my 2 filters ruining the magnets and the impellers. The problem is my dojo that has grown to almost 8", and loves to move around the tank. I wish I could move him, but my other tank is a 120gl with African cichlids, which he would be picked on.
Does anybody know of a heavier black sand that is not so powdery?? I thought of the Tahitian Moon, but I think is still may be too powdery.. Gravel, may be too sharp for the Dojo.. I do have also some Glow fish with him. Love to hear from other dojo owners.. Thanks..

Ps. I keep 2 marineland filters for the Dojo, a 200 and a 150. Wondering if the 200 is too powerful, and causing the problem??

What if you raise the intake?

Thanks Justin... I think I can cut about 1-2 inches from the 200. The 150 is not too far from the top. But, that's an idea.. Not sure if it will work, but thanks again...

I went with natural geography black sand from petsmart. It's the heaviest I found. The only problem is I think it raised my ph

Too late guys... Wife got mad and changed the sand to gravel (against my wishes) . Although this gravel is small and not sharp ( I think), I'm not happy bout the dojos (yes, I also have a much smaller one, which did not get big) being in gravel. But, the tank looks good, and both are swimming fine. The big one, even buried his head already.. I'll keep watching to make sure nothing happens. Thanks again guys for the great response..

I'd advise against moving in with the Africans, if he gets mauled or killed; you'd feel pretty bad

Would never put him in with those monsters (lol). They're happy with the glow fish, but in a tank a little too small. (no room for a larger tank). That's why I'm over filtering . Thanks for the reply..

My search for #12 black sand was a serious search!! I know you can get it special order and building supply places like Tractor Supply ( ?)....and the larger size keeps it down better...my question is...and don't take it wrong, but who's hobby is it? You or your wife's? Suggestion: Get your own tank and put black sand in it!!!! Black sand looks amazing.
I'm not an advocate of domestic dischord, and I certainly wouldn't want to cause a fight, but dude...
