i want to use some flourite black sand in my 36"-10"-17", but its soooo expensive. Are there any cheaper black sands i can mix it with to lower the cost? and if i only use half flourite will my plants still thrive? any advice is appreciate

black sand what didnt even know that existed thats sweet

Estes brand 'marine sand' comes in black and is available at most chain pet stores.
don't mind the use of the word 'marine' in the name, it's inert stuff.

There are a few other options too....

Tahitian moon sand
Soilmaster Select by Tesco
Colorquartz by 3M

I have even heard of blasting grit being used...although it is a bit too fine I hear.

black magic sand blasting sand if you don't have rays. way cheap and looks great

black magic is actually a product from weld slag. not actually sand at all.
i was wary at first knowing that it is a byproduct of metal. but it seems to do ok in the aquarium

It can be real sharp too. So a real no no for small catfish, it can damage their barbels.
