I have a 250 gallon acrylic with a shovel nose tiger cat, a puffer that no one can seem to identify, an alligator gar and a black ghost knife. Anyone have an idea where I can get about 300 pounds of black sand as cheap as possible? I am redoing and need some help. I am not really prepared to spend $400.00 on the substrate. I have heard pros and cons for using black beauty from very cheap to very sharp particles. Any help here on ideas and product prices would be appreciated. Is the black beauty really as bad as they say? Thanks

pool filter sand works good and is cheap I think? by the way where in texas you from im in amarillo

pool filter sand is actually very good substrate just that theres no black pool filter sand

Black Beauty? For sandblasting? That stuff is pretty fine and the particles are pretty sharp. I don't know if the sharpness is an issue at that small of particle size, but it is made for sandblasting so....(assuming we're talking about the same thing)

Estes makes a good black sand, I used to run it in my 55 gallon electric catfish tank, the downsides are a) its expensive as anything, b) it makes the tank look really dark. I ended up changing over to whitish sand also Estes brand and was much more pleased with it. Its $5 for a 5lb back or $20 for a 20lb bag so $1 = 1Lb. You would need around 240lbs of it for a good 2-3" base I think Pics below, sorry the first one is pretty questionable but you get the idea ~Trent

Thanks for all the repies and I will check them out. I am in Rockwall, just north east of Dallas. Right on the lake. All the Alligator gar and channel cats you could ever hope to keep. Alot of people told me to go with white sand but I had that in my ray and aro tank but it seems to make the fish skiddish for some reason and plus the 250 tank needs some overhauling. I want to try black sand with red lights. Some people say the nocturnal fish are not disturbed by red lights, but we will see. Thanks again.

Go to petlanddiscounts.com they have estes sand for under 20.00 a bag and I believe they are offering free shipping and a 10% off on internet orders

be careful of black beauty I think it is coal slag and may really screw up your ph and hardness....
