I was wanting to use black sand in my tank and was wondering what types of black sands are safe and where can they be purchased... thanks!!!

Black quartz sand

There used to be a product called 3M ColorQuartz on the market. Now an equivilent product called Estes Ceramaquartz is available. I just dropped 150 lbs of their white type s (fine) along with about 75 lbs of my old 3M ColorQuartz material into a new 150 gallon 6 foot tank and it looks great.

I've done black sand before, and unless you keep it super clean it shows a lot of fish waste and does not look good, but that is just my opinion.

I had to find a distributor that carried the stuff. Usually they are a pool construction supply house or abrasive blasting media wholesaler. Cost is around $25 for a 50 lb bag.
