I got some black shale rock to add to my tank. I have not used this before. There is a clay like sediment on it that does not scrape off very easily. Should this be left on or should I scrape it all off?
Any other input on this? I rinsed the rocks very well but there is a clay like sediment on them that would not even scrub off with a pot scrubber. Is it ok to just leave this on or should I remove this somehow before putting it in my tank?
Thanks for the info on your experience. I usually look for more than one response before proceeding but went ahead and put them in seeing as it worked fine for you.
You already scrapped them, should be fine. I usually do the same thing, just scrub them well, dip them in hot water for a bit and the new rocks are ready to use.
Slate would be better than shale. Shale is just flattened mud. If left in water for long enough it could turn into mud and fall apart. Slate is metamorphosed shale and it isn't going to be affected by water at all.
