Many of these cyprinids when young, show the dramatic colors we see in aquariums (the high fin shark for example, or tin foil barbs) but as they grow fade, and lose those young intense dramatic colors, and become silver (much like the carp they are related to) so this color change is quite normal .
The darker intense colors help them blend in, in shallow water, planted surroundings as juvie, when older and move to more open water, silver is more effective against predators.
