All my tanks have small river rock substrate about an inch deep. I would like to add a smaller black substrate to bring out the color of my fish and to match my solid black backgrounds.

Is the painted pebbles sold a Petsmart safe and durable?
Or is there something better.
I don't want to go with sand because I vacum the gravel quite regularly.

Thanks for your advice!

I just recently placed some of that very stuff in a tank. Its not bad really. just make sure you rinse it a TON! Very fine dust that clouds your tank. I thought 10 times was enough but i should've rinsed more. Its not acrylic, so it doesn't lose its color over time like the walmart stuff. Do you have plants? May wanna try eco-complete. Its full of nutrients, and cocmes in black to contrast your fish/plants. Hope this helps

Nice Tank!
This is exactly what I am looking for.
Where do you get the Estes 'black special'?

you should be able to get your LFS to order it for you.

it looks like this:

the tank I posted has been setup for 4 months. so far so good.

I have some of this gravel from another tank that is a few years old and its fine too.

the odd peice of gravel does wear a bit, losing some of the colour, but it should look okay for the long term

problem is, other than eco complete (which is quite fine) the only way to get a black substrate is to use black sand.

if you want something with the consistency of gravel (like I did), Estes brand is your best bet.
