Hey guys, I saw a bottle of blackwater extract for sale at a local fish store. Is this healthy for the tank and fish environment. I have a alligator gar. Is this ok for the peacock bass?
It is not really necessary but can be beneficial for most fish plus try cheaper options such as Indian almond leaves, peat and driftwoods but driftwoods alone will not suffice as the amount of tannins leached diminishes over time. Blackwater extracts are plainly tannins and are more expensive.
ive seen it been used many times for breeding perpouses. I know breeders that swear by it. it supposedly make the tank feel and look like natural breeding conditions.
all it does is puts nuetrients in your tank that if you are a good fish keeper your tank should already have and it makes the water more like the dark muddy waters that the fish come from. this makes some fish more active. but its prolly not necessary.
I like the leached look in some ways, but most people that don't know about it think your tank is dirty. My RES tank was leached until the driftwood started falling apart. I need to get another piece for it, I like the natural look for him anyway and I think he likes it better too. Probably because he spends the summer in the pond and it makes it feel like home.
