Hi I have read that black wolves are known to exist as pairs in the wild..... Anyone has advice or experience in keeping them as pairs in a comm tank?? Any tips on the specifics of pairing them?

Howdy

thanks for tagging me. I wanted to try it some years ago. My plan was to select a slim, lean specimen (hoping it’s a male) to pair with my own round-bodied black wolf (thinking its a female). I was going to introduce both to a 220 gal tank, which offered lots of hiding spaces, at the same time. i still wished I had tried

here’s why I didn’t:
- I didn’t have another large tank to separate the wolves in case they didn’t get along
- I’m kinda attached to my current wolf and didn’t want to risk losing her due to injury
-life got in the way

One more thing to consider is size: My wolf was already over a foot long at the time. Cohab is always easiest when you start out with several young fish, let them form a pair, then keep the pair and sell the others. that worked nicely for me when I set out to breed Odoe pikes. It just needs time....and you’ll have extra fish you need to sell off unless you have tons of tanks.

man, it’s a dream project. Go for it!!

Wow that's exactly what I have in mind!!
I am still considering at the moment. I will take the advice and see if the space and tanks allows for it!!
Thank you so much for sharing!!

If you can try for the group thing and let them naturally pair off. Helps with cichlids and other predatory type fish. Hoplias might be a little harder as they typically aren't sexually dimorphic.

It’s also quite $$$ with black wolves to start out with a half dozen....
