I have a 5" Quetzal/Fire head (Vieja synspilum) cichlid in my 180 gallon with several other medium fish. My daughter's boyfriend wants to get rid of his 6" Blackbelt (Vieja maculicauda) cichlid that is bothering the smaller fish in his 120. I am thinking of taking him.

Will the two most likely:
Get along?
Harass each other?
Kill each other?

The syspillium will probably be only semi-aggressive. It's the blackbelt that will harrass pretty much everyone in the tank. I've seen some really nasty ones.

they can both be very aggressive. It varies by fish. I have a synpilum that runs the show with a butterkoferi. Each one own half the tank with a Jag, 6 red terrors and a nic. He has quite an attitude. In a a tank that size you will stand a good chance but have a divider ready.

You're right, it will vary by fish. My Syns isn't aggressive at all. He'll defend himself if someone jacks with him but doesn't instigate. Ammerman, what size tank is the one you're talking about?

Mines an @hole lol. He(I think she actually)instigates it with the butterkoferi :D

thye will be semi

The Syn is mildly aggressive as it is, but not overly. He will sometimes line up to lip lock with my 7" Texas and 6" Jag but they never actually lock. He is not a problem. My daughter said when she came in from her boyfriends tonight that the Blackbelt is chasing all the fish around and trying to bite some. He is in a 120 with a couple of Geo's (I don't know how they are still alive), a Convict (died tonight), a medium Oscar and Bichir.

Maybe adding the Blackbelt is not a good idea?

adding any fish to an established tank is a problem(beleive me I know!) it might work if you could do some rearranging but in the end be ready to seperate, its always worth a shot

Maybe not. You have a Synspillium, a Texas and Jaguar, right? What are your other fish?

5 Silver Dollars (large)
10" JD

I know I am close to maxed out, if not already. All the fish I have now get along fine. I hate to see my duaghter's boyfriend give the Blackbelt to a lfs. The only lfs in my area that will take larger fish is a Pet's Plus, then he will sit in their crappy 5 an 10 gallon tanks. I made the mistake of giving them a 8" Gold Flowerhorn that I had that was constantly harrassing all my fish. I turned him in to them back in January and he still sitting their with a $199 price tag on it, and they will not drop the price. Never again.
