I am considering picking up a black aro for my tank. It has been over 3 months since I lost my silver and I'm ready for a new one. Was thinking of going with black just to avoid risk of drop eye (my silver had it at 8") and just for something different, but I haven't decided yet.

Since I'll be limited to a 6 foot tank til this summer I'm limited by the size of the fish I can get because I don't want it to outgrow the tank. I'm not in the habit of powerfeeding or anything, and my silver went from 3" to 8 or 9" in 4 months, nothing too outrageous. I figure he'd be a foot or so by now, so I'd consider that the biggest I'd get if I was to get a silver... but Blacks don't grow quite as fast, right? So I could potentially take on a slightly larger one? Or should I still try to look in the 8-10" max range?

A baby isn't out of the question either. The last one grew out in my SA cichlid tank til I moved him at about 5" and I could do that again. I'd rather get one that can go right into the big tank though because it could really use a top dweller. But really it'll come down to availability more than anything... just wasn't sure about black growth rates.

blacks do grow slower then silver

They are slower growers but well worth it in my opinion

Blacks are not always slow growers. I had a baby black go from 2.5" to 9" in about 4 months. If your do a search, a member here "Boydo" Had a black reach 30" within 4 years.

Black Aros don't get drop eye? I though all Arowanas were subjected to getting drop eye. I've head 3 silvers and each one of them got it....

Ya it's too bad my baby black jumped out of the tank.:( He'd probably 12 or 13" now. My other black aro on the other hand is a very slow grower. I got her in Feb of 2007 at 11" she is now 19". So only 8" growth in almost 2 years.

Mine also grew quickly. But even so at half the pace of silvers.

And blacks have no DE
