If the Tannins won't alter the PH then I don't see it being a problem and it would benefit the fry as a antifungal and food source.

If you are going to use Blackwater extract It should be ok also. You don't want the PH to be soft for CA Cichlids.

I personally use mostly dead Oak tree leaves for my 2 smaller aquariums with SA species in them.
