Anyone have any idea if blackwater extract is good for the fish, or if it provides any benefit at all for angels and tetras? Was at lfs and saw some, and if it is beneficial, I am going to add it to my regular routine of care.

Also heard somewhere that fish protector is good for fish. Have bought some of that, and will add to my tanks, but I don't want to be buying/using a lot of stuff if it isn't beneficial.
Most livebearers and tetras here, plus 3 angels and 5 betta males.
Any advice as to additives that will keep all these kids happy and healthier would be appreciated

The fish will do fine with blackwater tonics, just don't overdo it (and go lighter on the Bettas) (bring to levels up over a period of a month with W/C's).

And are you talking about Kordon Fish Protector?, if so it's ok too.

What are you using to dechlor the water with?

I do have concerns with the '5 male Bettas' tho, especially with Angels, let alone with each other (if you mean in one tank).

Feel free to post some pix if you can too.

BWE is basically a water softener & your fish will be fine without it. Wild-caught softwater fish will prefer it but many fish nowadays (especially the ones you mentioned) are tank bred in regular tap water. I don't even use it for my discus.

I continue to use this stuff, although in smaller amounts than I have in the past. I use it solely to "age" the water during water changes. Does this provide any tangible benefit to my fish? I have no idea...but it makes ME feel better because I like the idea of water with a respectable organic content. I am currently using Kent Blackwater Pro, but have used Ketapeat Nuggets in the past. With either of these products, I notice that most of it seems to be filtered out by the polyester pads that I have in my canister filters. Beyond that, yes, these products can be used to soften the water, but I suspect that the desired effect would only be achieved by using voluminous quantities and there are probably more cost-effective methods to achieve soft water conditions.

Thank you very much. I guess I will continue to use it on a lighter scale. As for the bettas, rest assured that they each have their own home aquarium. Takes up a lot of space, but they are sooo worth it. The angels are in their own tank as well, as are the tetras. One room, many, many tanks. :)
Thanks very much. I really appreciate it.
