Bleeding gills

My 4 yr old oscar is bleeding from his gills when he attempts to eat. He seemed to be working his mouth afterwards the first time it happened 3 days ago. I thought maybe he had a piece of pellet lodged, so I did a wc and waited a few days to feed again. Well this time he did not even get a pellet and it was like the act of opening his mouth wide caused the discomfort and bleeding. He acted almost like he was gagging. Otherwise his behavior is ok and no visible abnormalities. Not sure what to do or what is wrong. Nitrate < 20, temp 76.6, ph 6.6.

have you taken him out physically examined him - open the mouth and use a flashlight to look around, maybe even sedate him for more thorough examination?? RD.

I have not taken the fish out yet, but it seems like the best thing to do. How much clove oil do you think it will take to knock out a 11 to 12 inch fish?

I wish I could tell you, I have never had to do it.

Looks like 40-100mg/l is a safe dose. I have done it with a sa puffer and it was effective. I have to get my equipment/supplies together and will probably attempt to examine the fish this afternoon. Hopefully it will prove to be something I can identify and correct without causing further harm to the fish.

I don't want to do this willy nilly, and am reading some research about dosing. With the puffer I used the same amount detailed by another fishkeeper per cup of water. This is a little different since I will be using 5g tanks and the fish is much larger. So far the best I can figure is between .6ml to 1ml for a 5 gallon tank. Since the fish is not in immediate peril I want to be cautious about the process.

he is a big fish. You might be able to get a good enough look awake. These things have huge mouths
