Bleeding through scales?

One of my favorite fish looks like a goner. Does anybody have any idea what this might be? My friend suggested he might have gotten his ass kicked, but I think this is unlikely as he was the boss of the tank.

Any idea what this might be?

Thanks, I appreciate it. I lost the female the next morning. Here's a picture of them in their better days.

The only positive is that they produced 36 fry for me about a month ago. I was going to sell them, but I now I'm going to probably keep most of them.
