I saw one of these at my LFS and was wondering if anyone has had any experience keeping these beautiful specimens? It was pretty crazy looking and was $100 for a 5 inch fish. I'm guessing it might have been wild caught. It looked like it.
I've got a paratilapia polleni which is very closely related, I also have 3 1" bleekeri fry. The water requirments are much like that of central american cichlids. They will also mix well with SA/CA cichlids.
You can see pics of my polleni and his tankmates here;
That dollar amount does seem pretty high. But I am guilty of paying high dollar for fish that others could buy for much cheeper. If you like it and have the money, buy it!
$100 is a lot for 5 inches. We don't really know what's going on with the whole polleni/bleekeri complex but there is a debate to whether or not the species found in the lfs around the u.s. are really true species, hybrids or something else? Check out Madfish group on yahoo groups. There are really knowledgeable people there regarding Cichlids and other fishes from Madagascar.
btw you can get a 2in polleni here for $7 in Ontario..
Not all bleekri or polleni are created equal. Just look at the picture thread for these fish. I have seen these guys keep there dull/fright colors all their lives.
One day I found an awsome example of polleni. The only problem was it was already in someone else's show tank. It took months of begging. pleading and also 100 bucks to get him.
If its a great looking fish and you have the money go for it.
