Before I start I just would like to request no one flame/hate/criticize my current setup; I assure you the fish are all fine.
Greetings MFK community. I have been a fishkeeper for many years, but due to more recent financial restraints the only fish I have are a male betta and two white cloud mountain minnows. They live in an unfiltered tank which is kept warm by means of the lights and radiators in the room and I monitor ammonia/ph/etc and do very frequent water changes and the fish have been happy for nearly 2 years this way.
I have several unused tanks in the basement; a 5 1/2 gallon, a 10 gallon, a 3 gallon, 6 gallon, and some others. I was considering trying to house two or three blind cave fish in one of them without a filter. Like the other tank I would perform frequent water changes to keep the water in good health and the cave fish are very tolerant of lower water temps in the high 60s that most tropical fish would not be able to tolerate. Just was wondering if anyone else has tried to do this with cave tetras before and if so how successful were you? I had several of them in one of my larger community tanks back in the day and I miss their novel presence
Everyone knows the optimum setup for any fish is a heated/filtered/planted/etc tank but it is not the "only" way to house certain fish as long as the keeper is experienced enough to compensate for the lack of a filter. That being said, I would never be foolish enough to try housing most fish species (freshwater or marine) without a properly filtered tank of ample size. I think it could work with the Cavies given their ability - and for spawning preferred ability - to live in water temps in the high 60s range.
