i have recently purchase a 14" blk aro and a 14" silver from a friend. they are both being housed in a temporary 125 with another 14" silver. both aro's were displaying decent colors especially the black aro. it's been nearly a week and haven't seen both new aro's eating. i'm starting to see the black losing it's colors on it fin (starting to fade).
my question is if it starts eating again will the color on the fins come back or will it stay faded?

black aros lose there color when they grow bigger. sounds normal to me. when it starts eating I doubt it will get its color back.

its probably not eating cause it is still stressed. give them a few days.

I just transfered 2 big silvers and they didn't eat for 3 weeks. they get stressed and need to get used to their new home. the bigger they are, the longer the hunger strike. i got them eating again by adding 3 cupfuls of garlic guard into their water and threw in 20 crickets. they couldn't resist. the next day i threw in chunks of beef heart and they attacked it instantly. they've been eating well ever since. just be patient. they will not starve themselves.

and for the colors on the black aro, it will lose color as it gets older. but they actually look better in my opinion. the black turns into a bluish.

maybe its stress thats why

sounds as if you blk aro is just stressed. The only color your black aro will loose with age is the orange from the edge of the fins. Though I would think at 14" your aro does not have much orange left.

well for one.. u need to find out what the previous owner feed the fish.... it could be new environment and they dont eat..

Over time they will.. I would do crickets first.. and bine shrimp....
But i recommend MEAT STRIPS! YES raw meat! cut like feeder fish...

Put it by their mouth.. u might get bite..... but it doesnt hurt really... my two 14" silver are eating raw meat.. twice a week, every 2-3 days..

did my last feeding for the day at 8:30pm threw in food sticks and FD krill and seen them start to eat but didn't think they ate much. oh well as long as their starting to eat again. thanks for the help guys.

does anybody know how to tell its gender?
i was told by the owner that he thinks that the new SA is a male because of its mouth (jaw). the bottom jaw is a little extend then the upper, is he right.
have any of you bred SA? i was thinking of doing a breeding project with my aros.
THANKS!
