I need help

My 3-4 inch bichir is very bloated in his front area(just behind fins). Started a few days ago and now he's hanging around the top of the tank alot more then usual. I can see a small dark area(think its his organs) inside. Does seem to be looking for food still.

I changed the thick gravel over for sand-like gravel around the time he became bloated, Could he have swallowed it? He is in a tank with elder bichir, ropefish and rainbow shark. Everyone gets along except rainbow can be bossy.

Am very worried for him.

I'm not expert on bichir problems but could it possibly be his air bladder?

I feed him
cichlid sinking pellets. All my fish been eating them for years. Sometimes they get bloodworms.

Does he eat alot? And don't worry it will go away. My two senegals get that sometimes and it doesn't last more than a day... usually only a few hours.

he seems fine now...gets bloated then slims down.

The pellets probably swelled up inside him. He needs to digest. Do you feed Hikari sinking carnivore pellets at all? Those are the best for them.

Feed HBH sinking chiclid attach pellets, small size. seems to be their fav. Can't get hikiari brand stuff very often here.

He does seem to puff up after feeding time though the adult doesn't do it.
