Hi All,

One of the large Salmon catfish 16" (Boofhead Catfish, Ariopsis leptaspis) got sick last Sunday (23/12/12). We were away from home, and it was a very warm day here in Melbourne, Australia. it was around 39C or 102.2F outside. usually we keep the home AC on if we are at home. But unfortunately we were not at home to switch it on.

When we got back on Monday, the tank water temp was around 31C or 87.8 F. The catfish was not swimming much and was bit pale compared to his partner. It didn't eat food either. but at least it was not up side down..

But since the last 2-3 days, it's belly is bloated/swollen and is upside down. doesn't swim at all. just keep breathing slowly. some times it does move to one side of the tank with difficulty.. its partner goes under it and lift its so that it can turn to the correct side too.. but that doesn't help much too..as soon as it let it go, it turns upside down again.

I have done a 3/4 water change of the tank and also got the water tested at 2 aquariums. the water condition is good. I've added some Tetracycline tablets as well to the tank to help with any infections. but that didn't helped much.

the sick catfish shares the tank with another large salmon catfish, a Saratoga, giant gourami, sailfin pleco and 5x red hook silver dollars. All of them are healthy and eat well.

Any advice on a remedy or cure for this health issue is greatly appreciated

Thank you

PS: I've uploaded a photo of it, taken some time back.

Thanks a lot for the info Strollo. I'll give it a try first in the tomorrow morning..

Give the fish a pea with some epsom salt on it. Could be bloat. The pea will help constipation.

Hi Strollo, I tried the Epsom salt and pea treatment this morning.. but unfortunately I think the catfish was already too weak, as it hadn't eaten anything for few days..

It died few hours before midnight (new year's eve). It was 2KG and 17" in length. It was a sad way to end 2012..

I'll get another salmon catfish for his partner in the new year..

Thanks again for your response.

Have a Happy New Year !!!

Sorry to hear about your loss man. Hopefully 2013 starts better than 2012 ended for you.
