A few days ago I bought a 55 gallon tank from a guy on craigslist as a bigger tank for my two blood parrots. The guy failed to mention that the tank came with fish. I had no where to put them and the blood parrots needed to be moved so now they are all in the tank together. There is no fighting but I am not familiar with some of these fish. Aside from my two blood parrots the surprise fish include: 1 Leopard Ctenopoma (about 4"), 1 Synodontis Eupterus (about 6-7"), 1 common pleco (about 6-7"), And 4 medium sized giant danios. Are any of these fish ok to stay living in the 55g with my bps? If I must rehome all the surprise fish how many Blood Parrots can live comfortably in a 55g? Opinions appreciated. :)

Compatibility wise, I think the combo may work. Bioload wise, I'd keep a eye on water parameters and consider picking some of them out. I'd take out the pleco and catfish, major poopers. That's just me.

Just my 2cent.
Cheers!

If I rehomed everyone but the blood parrots could they possibly be housed with a jack Dempsey? Just curious.

I've heard some people say that you should have 30G for one BP, and 10 more for any additional BP's

If I rehomed everyone but the blood parrots could they possibly be housed with a jack Dempsey? Just curious.

You could try it. General rule of thumb is to house them with similar sized, equally aggressive fish, but finding tank mates for BP's can be difficult due to the deformed mouth, it makes them more susceptible to any aggression attempts. If it's what you really want than give it a try, just be prepared and have a backup plan in case things don't work out.

I was also thinking about getting a third blood parrot (instead of the jd). I have a friend who is willing to trade me her 6 inch blood parrot for my giant danios and pleco. :)

If I were you I'd do the parrot, but that's just my personal opinion... My theory is you can never have too many blood parrots lol. I've had to restrain myself a couple times at the lfs because I just don't have the tank space.

Whichever route you choose though, be sure to post pictures! :)

Well the person that was going to take the giant danios fell through. Though I did rehome the pleco last night (the synodontis was attacking him). Now the blood parrots are picking on the ctenopoma and I have to remove him. Out of curiosity, I have a 3 inch male jewel cichlid in a 20g. Could I put him in the 55g with the blood parrots, synodontis, and giant danios? (still trying to rehome the danios though)
