I'm thinking of adding a 2-6 blood parrots to my tank to get a bit of red coloring into the mix. Are there concerns about them competing for food? How bad does their gimped mouth affect this? I feed generously.. probably over doing it.. but at least I make sure everything gets a chance as some fish never leave their deep confines and hiddey holes yet still get enough to eat. I'm not willing to go any further with this to accommodate a single species.

The tank has a couple foot long Pearsei's, a few chocolates, a school of silver dollars and several hundred smaller fish.

They may out compete your Chocolates for food! Your only issues will be initial shyness, but once that has passed they are good!

Couple hundred smaller fish? Pics of the tank and fish interested to see your setup. The blood parrots lik ad88 says are shy at first but become much better later on. Blood parrots can get up to 10 inches so me mindful of the other fish. They will try to eat the hundred smaller fish sooner or later. They might not eat it due to their deformed mouth but will peck at them trying to.

Interesting... thanks for the replies. I had heard the opposite, that they might not be able to keep up with the faster feeders, so this is good news. Cool beans!

Yeah, I kind expected to lose the smaller fish once I put cichlids in the tank but that hasn't happened yet. My chocolates are about 8 inches and they ignore the smaller fish too. I have schools of small tetra's and barbs that are barely 1.5 and they'll barely part for a foot long Pearsei to cruise through. My tank might have an all time record for places to hide, that's probably a factor.

Check links in my sig if interested in tank details.

Thanks again.
