I just recently picked this 2.5ft blood python in a local trade. Not sure of the gender, but since I'm not looking to breed it's not really a "need to know" thing for me. I'd been interested in bloods for a while now, and had started to slightly look into listings on Kingsnake, Fauna, Ben Siegal's auctions, etc (even considered a few of the juveniles that came into work... but thank you retail mark up, even my employee discount wasn't going to bring that down to reasonable pricing lol). Found this one posted on CL and they were one town away, so I'm giving it a shot.

Currently, I have it set up in a smaller quarantine tank for observation. But s/he will be moved into a larger tank after that period is over.

Set-up currently is Eco Soil substrate, large water/soaking dish, two separate hides, various fauna/branch decor, humidity is at 61 (trying to keep it between 55-65), temperature of the the majority of the tank is 78-80f, the basking area is at about 88f. Basically, I did a set-up similar to what we do at work for the juveniles we occasionally get in.

I have a substrate question, though. I keep seeing that posted everywhere as the best substrate for them. I'm using Eco Soil, just because I like that in the cages where I'm a little more strict with the humidity plus I don't like the idea of paper inks near my animals. But just curious as to whether or not it really was good, and why I keep seeing it on almost every care sheet and hearing it mentioned at shows.

Anyway, comments, advice, things to be changed/tweaked, etc are welcome. And here's my new blood python:

I see that the brighter ones sell for a lot more, but I really like this muted caramel coloration (the pics are a little bit more yellow, my flash and the lighting weren't cooperating... $400 flash and it wants to screw with me, haha). It's a nice snake, pretty shy but not aggressive. I was expecting a slightly calmer version of the little devils from work, but this one seems to be a pretty relaxed snake.

That's a pretty one! One of my buddies had one, great snakes. She was very calm, and smart. She figured out how to open the terrariums front door by herself, so he had to padlock it. The coolest thing she did was after she was done exploring the room she would go back to her enclosure and try to close it. So yeah, they're smart and very strong. Its colors are only going to get better with age.

Gorgeous snake! They are my favorite species of snake I have owned. And as far as substrate I originally used newspaper without any trouble and eventually switched over to the eco soil due to me wanting to have a more natural look. The eco soil did hold the humidity better but other than that I didn't notice any other differences.

TY All! The snake is settling in pretty nicely, I'm going out to pick up her first meal tomorrow and to pick up bigger/heavy hides. It's having a field day balling up inside of the current ones and then flipping them all over the place. -_- Ah well, it's a beauty so who cares.

Yea, the only negative thing I had in the back of my head was the ink... being from the printing/publishing industry, the majority of inks used outside the food industry have ammonia in them since it's cheaper than the alcohol based ones. And I always have ink on my hands after I'm done with the paper. But I saw it recommended everywhere, so just thought I'd ask. I don't think I'll use it ever but mostly because newspaper would kill the look of the set-up, haha.

Nice looking snake. My blood is on Eco Soil or something similar. In my opinion, it looks nicer, absorbs more of the musk stink than newspaper. I used to have to change my newspaper all the time because of the horrible smell. Nowadays, I spot clean and do routine changes of the substrate. There's always newspaper without print that I've seen people use. Hope this helps.
