why is my jewel so red he is a extremely vibrant red. is this ok he/she looks brilliant. the tank has under gone issues. temp change from 71 to 85 in 24 hours (heater malfunction) and 2 new fish 1 of which is now the biggest. The jewel was the biggest until the new arrival. no good pictures

It's okay, I tend to notice that my jewels will turn more red when they are exposed to other fish. My red jewel was almost white when I introduced a couple other fish (one being another red jewel) and they both turned very red as well. So I would say this is normal ;)

jewel cichlids will be washed out and greyish most of the time, unless they are breeding, or establishing territory. sounds to me like adding new fish to the tank your jewel is trying to protect his territory, flashing is war colors at the new comers. unless one of the newbies just happens to be a pretty lady cichlid..

My two Red Jewels spawned 14 fry! I realized it today, and I'm so happy to see it. I'm although very surprised because the female did not eat any of them! The fry are following the female like a mother! I'm very happy.

cichlids don't normally eat their own young, other cichlids will, but usually the parents do not.
