I saw some blood red jewel cichlids at the LFS today. They are soooo bright red. Much brighter red than what I recall normal jewel cichilds to be - even when they were breeding. Does anyone know anything about them? I mean - are they natural? or are they "man-made" or enchanced? any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thats a beauty! :) I was at the LFS today again and they had about 12-15 of these blood red jewels in a 40 gal tank. I sat there watching them - and there were two particular individuals who fended off everyone and everything from their 10 sq. inches in the right corner of the aquarium. They did this for the entire duration of 30-35 mins as I watched them. I took the opportunity and snatched them both up. Hopefully I landed myself a pair. :) (Else - there is gonna be bloodshed.)

nice jewel repair...

there are many different species of red jewel from the Hemichromis genus. the species generally referred to as the blood red jewel is Hemichromis lifalili which is the reddest of the blood red jewels. :headbang2
