I was inspired by Miles' design so I decided to replicate it. Here are some pictures from the initial stages.
Also, among the pond pictures, you will see that I found a bit of a surprise in my net. I haven't had fish for about a year now since I have been travelling and, when I went to move the cycle fish from the sump tank to the pond, I just grabbed my very old net from the fish supplies box in the garage. Half way through transferring them, I felt something strange in the net. Let's just say I hope it's a myth that those things can keep their poison for years afterwards.
Another surprise was that both of my pumps overcame the forces of gravity; either that, or I chose a drain pipe that was too small. As you can see, I had to install an overflow box in addition to the drainage to accomodate the pump flow. There was no way I was going to go through the work of putting a bigger drain in.
I still have to stuff the sump tank with bioballs and sponges. I have an old pond filter that I might install above the sump tank and have the drainage from the pond run into it. Does anyone put plants in their sump tanks for some additional water filtration?
I am also considering putting some sand in there, but I'm going with a bare bottom for now.
Now I just need a motoro...
