a friend and I were talking today about the difference in cost between a 1/2 horsepower blower compared to a larger piston pump.. can someone out there tell me what the average cost of a 1/2 horsepower blower would cost me to run for the whole month... I did a google search and came up with some numbers, but they didn't seem right.. can anyone help???

1/2 hp is about 400 watts

400x 24 hrs/day x 30 days/month

288000 watts or 288 kw hours

at 10 cents ??? per kwh thats $29 month at full power

Aside from the electrical running costs, blowers generate a lot of noise and heat. They are good for huge volume- strong pressure air demands like deeper ponds several hundred meters away. For a non commercial fish room I recommend a diaphram type air pump. "The Pump 60" for example runs on about 80 watts ? and is very quiet. Application for high volume - low pressure air such as 60cm deep aquaria. I would also factor in a second pump regardless of which type you use (or a good set of spare parts) unless you can afford to run without filtration for any downtimes. I usually set up the second pump on the same air loop (whether running or not) so its easy to switch in.
