so how much better is the blu-ray picture over dvd picture on a 1080p tv? and how long do you think blu-ray will be around, or even dvd will be around till "the next big thing" comes along?

just wondering if its worth making the jump to blu-ray.

get a ps3. a games console and a blu-ray player all in one. and its the only player that is future proof with regards to blu-ray features that are eventually coming out. between 1080p and 1080i on a good brand tv there is no visible difference. you need specialist machines to find the difference. particularly noticable on cgi heavy movies.
the picture difference between dvd and blu-ray is remarkable. i thought it was all a big con to get you to buy a new player and discs but there really is a visible difference.

the next big thing will be memory sticks/cards. films will be on those eventually IMO. they can store far more than discs but are a fraction of the size. although sony do have a prototype disc that holds 3 figures worth of data (cant remember the exact number).
