I want to hear from Blue Acara owners. I've never kept them before. I've always preferred GTs, but I'm kind of fed up with them and want to go for a similar looking acara. Just would like to hear any stories or thoughts about why you like Blue Acaras.

I've never cared for blue acaras or kept either species but curious as to why you're fed up with gt's.

Bad luck with them. I've owned multiple cichlids over the years and don't think I've ever had as much bad luck as I have with GTs.

Bad luck as in you can't keep them healthy? I've heard this from other people too.

Pretty much. To make it more frustrating most have died unexpectedly or with no signs they're ill until it's too late. When I first got into cichlids, I decided the two fish I wanted most were a Green Terror and Jack Dempsey. After that I decided I had to have Festae and Polleni as well and the hobby ballooned from there, an experience many of you have probably shared. I've kept countless cichlids since then with multiple tanks, and I still have that very first Jack Dempsey I bought. She's full grown and has done great. Meanwhile, the first GT I bought was dead within two months and since then I've lost more than a half dozen Green Terrors. Next to Calvus on the African side, I've not come across another fish more fragile, more difficult to keep alive.

hi dude
I own a 5" blue acara.
he's a male and fairly peaceful but has his bully moments
he's a beautiful fish.

I had a blue acara pair. The male grew fast and was gorgeous. He was aggressive though and they actually never showed signs of pairing until I found them guarding eggs. He was very aggressive towards her. But it was a Cichlids so they are always hit or miss. He jumped out of my tank and died though. He was my first fish.

I like the idea that you don't need as big of a tank for Blue Acaras and I presume its easier to have a pair with tankmates. I like that you get similar facial markings, but they certainly aren't quite as dazzling to look at in my experience.

I have a mated pair that I keep by themselves as well as a non mated pair I keep in my SA/CA community.

In the community they tend to show a more vibrant color on a constant basis, although nothing compares to the color my female shows when she's guarding her eggs/wrigglers.

I have noticed the community Acara's not only show more color on a day to day basis but they have also grown larger (same diet and temps) they are also more sociable than their mated, species tank counterparts.
