Hey folks I'm brand new to this but I picked these two because in a tank of 12 Acara these two stayed together and the small one defended the bigger one. The question, is this a breeding pair? In my tank now the are never apart.

they are most likely a pair.....check and see if the larger one's trailers on the dorsal and anal fins are longer and more graceful appearing than the smaller one. In a tank full of 12, generally when 2 fish stay together constantly, it means they are pairing up and have reached sexual maturity

Yes they can possibly be forming a pair. But a breeding pair isn't confirmed until they spawn
