Hey guys. Newbie member here. I am planning on starting up a 55 gallon Blue Acara tank. Not too sure on tank mates though, I was thinking about a couple hoplo cats but was wondering about some oddballs anyone could recommend that would work with the acara. Things like Knife fish, bichers, pikes, eels, odd cats and plecos etc. Thanks

I assume its a pair of acaras...how about ropefish instead of a poly..also some halfbeaks to patrol the top level

I'm setting up a similar tank myself, so any more suggestions would be great.

My plan includes:

2x Blue Acara (pair)
1x Albino Bristlenose pleco
1x Golden Gourami
5x Snakeskin (Rhomb) Barb

With Acara's being more mellow and peaceful you could probably get away with going with less aggresive community species as long as they are not so small that they will become a snack for the Acara.

With that being said about them being a less aggressive species, could I house a african knife or a brown knife in the tank or is that pushing it a little. An how large do royal plecos get? I've heard between 6-16 inches, but thats quite a gap

Acaras I had could be a little pushy at times. They do get to be a pretty blue and red color and are worth the promblems they sometimes cause. I kept mine with filamnet barbs with out any issues. Also introduced a brown acara (port cichlid) to the tank and they all got on pretty well. Like I said sometines the blue acaras got a little pushy but nothing too serious. They are cool fish so enjoy!

African Knifes grow from to somewhere between 8 and 12" so I am assuming that with adequate filtration it could be possible but that is just a guess, do not quote me on that. With that said I personally keep a black ghost knife with my SA/CA cichlids and he does just fine.

A royal pleco on the other hand, I don't think would work at all. I haven't kept one myself but from what I've read they can reach 16" which I would say would not be a good choice for your setup.

While searching around before buying my albino bristle nose, I used this guide to find a pleco that I figured I could comfortably house for life.

Hope this helps! :)
