Was going to populate my 300 gallon native tank with dollar sunfish....but the cost is too much and california has all kinds of restrictions.
Thinking of shifting gears and going with 16 baby electric blue acaras. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Interesting idea. Maybe as a secondary. I have larger gravel in there, would that bug them?

Not necessarily, but I know mine go bananas for the 3-5mm stuff I gathered. They will only do the normal eartheating behavior if they can get it in their mouths. I found them to be a blessing when I was swapping from Hikari to new life spectrum sinkers. Also I've found that mine tend to negate the diggers in the tank. Always nice and level :). I think it's a wonderful idea to put them together. Both relatively docile species with great behavioral traits. Hoping to see pics when you make a decision!

I think that is an awesome idea. I would add something yellow or orange for color contrast. Either Nicaraguans or red spotted severum. It would really make the tank pop.

Well, over the last week I grabbed 6 electric blue Acaras, 6 giant Danios, 5 skirt Tetras, 12 lampeye tetras, 1 raphael cat, 7 cory cats, 3 chain loaches, 1 plain bicher & two cool leapord looking catfish similar to pictus cats. Didn't get the name. Still looking into a couple geophagus'. No smaller ones locally at the moment.
Tank is working really well so far. Tetra's are clearing the top. Acara's are working the middle . Cats are hoovering the bottom.

sounds great except the Bichir and Raphael Cats with Corries. They all get big enough to eat the corries and corries have barbs that can kill the fish eating them. The Bichir will also eat your tetras and danios in the night.

Ill keep aneye on em. Bicher is way too small to harass anyone yet. The one raphael cat is more likely. I was most worried about the chain loaches because they are the smallest. Time will tell.

I have a breeding pair Electric Blue Acaras. they were going like mad but I never removed fry and other fish kept eating them up after a couple days. Where is Cali are you? I'm in Sacramento, If they breed again then Maybe I will pull them this time. I need to pick up a fry tank.
