Ok I am new to this site not new to fish keeping. I have 9 IT's 1 AT and 1 ITT Dat. I have been keeping Dats for a year now. I keep the IT's and the AT in a 210 gallon tank with a 22 inch Black Aro. When I got the fish they were stable and showing good color contrast for about a week each.(they were introduced ant different times) Then they would go to full not stable and stay there. They eat well and are generally active. My ITT is kept in a seperate tank mostly because of his size he would probably be eaten in the big tank. He is very stable. The tank that has the ITT is planted and has a blue background the 210 has a brown background is this a possible reason for the stability? I keep my 210 at 82 degrees for the first 6 months I used an auto water chaging system. It was always below 5 ppm nitrates. We have very hard water here in Utah so ph is around 8. I put drift wood in to see if this would help it only turned the water murky. I have been doing 50% weekly water changes and adding salt. I also run a UV sterilizer. I am ready to try to plat this tank and turn the background blue to hope to get the same stability as my ITT in the planted tank. Any ideas? I am open to suggestions. BTW the IT's are between 6-10 inches.

I just realized I posted my Dat as an ITT it of course is a NTT, I typo a lot and for some reason I can't find an edit option.

Really NOBODY on this forum has an opinion on this subject? I was hoping to get some help with this from the vast amount of experienced Dat keepers that I have seen here. I know in my searches for quality info on Dats has really left me empty handed. I have searched for any printed material and none that I can find. So now I was hoping for forum experience.

hi my NGT is in a tank with a black background and the only time he's not stable is when the RCK picks on him (quite alot at the mo,so he will have to go !),i used to have an indo in a tank with a blue background and it didn't make any difference to his stability,i think tankmates are the reason, especially when they are bigger than the dats even if they aren't especially aggressive and/or lack of hiding places especially when the dats are small, but this is only my opinion from some experience

ThAt's a good size tank for the tigers....
I wouldn't mess with water paraeters, they seem fine, and tigers are better suited to hard wAter in my experience.
I used to think background affected stability, but not so certain now. Wether it's bare bacground, blue or black, my tigers have generally remained pretty stable.
Go for it, change background, but leave it for at least 15 weeks. This is what did for each background change- giving the tigers a decent time period to adjust to the background.

If u wait a week then change, it's not long enough as tigers take a long time to settle in.

Remove all hiding spaces, this does help with stability I find with tigers of all sizes.
My Avatar shows stable tigers on black bkground. They were slightly less stable when it blue or bare, not not much.
Reduce wc to 25% and do twice a weeks, only add salt if there's a problem.

Thanks for the response. What about substrate? Right now it is Estes Medium Broadcast red color. (epoxy cover quarts) http://www.estesco.com/aqua.html
http://www.estesco.com/pdf/surface.pdf It is an inert product so it should not effect anything. I have heard that Aros don't like red but do Dats care?

I have used sand, gravel, and bare bottom tank, for my tigers. Probably about 1 year for each substrate. Over those years, I don't think my tigers really care. After changingthw substrate, your data will probably be on full alert mode! Acting super stable.... This is just a reaction to the chnage in substrate. After a few months, they settle an their true
colours show through.

Not sure about the red colour though, never seen dats against this.
Good to see some pics....;)

Here is a some picks about 3 months old. They actually are less stable now then they were then I also removed the red rocks about 1 month ago.

doesn't look like much wrong to me ! lol,the bottom 2 pics show very healthy tiger(s)

Ok millhouse. The ntt is very nice. If it's stable like that all the time, then
your lucky.
I have read in some posts that if 1 tiger is kept in a community tank, it is likely to be stable.
Remember what works for one person may not work for another.
I still suggest take all decor out. Then change blue background like your other tank, and wait 3 months, see what happens.
IT's r notoriously bad for being unstable. There is only so much u can do to nfluence this
the rest is luck and genes of that fish.
Less u do the better for dats, in my experience. If u change something don't expect results in a few days or weeks, that's why I say leave it for 3 months or so.
Keep an eye on that arro. It may be stressing out the tigers.
