Blue claw crabs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're cheap (can be bought from the grocery store). Tolerate a wide temp range and salinity from brackish to full marine. And, will eat anything offered. However, they're highly aggressive and WILL eat any and all tankmates, including other blue claw crabs. They're also amazing escape artists and can lift pretty heavy tops to do so.

Oddball that sounds awesome (except for the eating of all other tankmates). Are they really that strong to lift the tops? How big can they get?

Just make sure it has no access to the top surface that it can climb on and you should be fine. And yes they are strong, they are like any other aggressive predatory crab. Salinity, they are very tolerable.

The average max growth is about 8" in carapace width. With the legs, they're about a foot across. Some individuals have been recorded with nearly 11" carapace width.

BTW, they're called Callinectes sapidus if you want to research a bit on them.
