Hi, i have this EBJD, and i have had it for about 2 years now, with no problems lately... Just this past w/e i noticed that he wasnt eating the normal portions... so i have been watching him closely now and i have noticed only one side of his gills is moving... Like it looks as if he is only breathing on one side.. also the fish is not swimming normally, sometimes just chilling on the substrate, and when i try and feed him, he will bite a worm and swim away(normally you cant feed the fish enough). Also his jaw was always a little crooked, but now it looks even more off then normal...VEry non-aggressive EBJD too... Has anybody ever seem symptoms like this? My water parameters are good with low ammonia levels. I just added some new JD (hopefully females) with the hopes to induce breeding... ANY IDEAS? pleas figure out the isse of my blue stud!

But he is roughly 5 Inches in length and the new JD's are literally only 2.5". They look like little wimps and i couldnt imagine him getting hurt by one of those bastaaaaaaad's. ANyone ever experience a cichlid with like Lock jaw or a fish who had a sore jaw and slowed in eating>?? What should i do to help? what else could have caused this? Hes in a 90G with a Retic Pup, Glass Knife, 2 small Jd's, Firemouth Small, CLown Knife... I NEver see my fish square off.. SO i am so confused.,,,    :( :WHOA:

fish oftentimes square off when nobodys watching.my buttikoferie never fought in front of me,but i cought him a couple of times picking on my JD and he doesnt have a tail anymore

well i had a slight nitrate level, nothing rediculous, just more then normal so i did a 45% water change and then added the female dempseys.. now 3 days later his jaw is crooked and only one side of his gills move when he breathes...I will be so angry if my Stud dies!!! especially after having to nurse him back to health for so long afgter he got beat up at like 2" long!

Anyone ever see a fish breathe only thru one side of gills? meaning one side of the heads gills doesnt move and the other does.... and can if you over feed a fish does it just sit and not be as active?

Are sure the new jd are females? Did you quarantine them? Also, if you read up on EBJD on this site (there are at least 2 who breed them), EB are very finicky with water quality.

No im not sure there females, i took all the advice i found and used it when selecting the JD's for my Blue dempsey. I chose the Jd's that had the less pointed fins and had the most spangles on there gills. I have never had any water issues with him in roughly 2 years. The only time he was ever in rough shape was when he was beaten up by a stupid Jewel cichlid. Live and Learn, ill never make that mistake again.. he was in a quarentine for about a year for recovery... now he was growing very fast in his 90 G and after growing about 2.5 inches in a like 5 months or so, he suddenly has a crooked jaw and isnt swimmin or eating the same as usual.. the part that worries me is that only his left gillside moves when he breathes.. the right side stays closed!! Any advice on what i should do??! any body ever hear of this gill problem!??!?! hes such a nice blue dempsey so unaggressive, i hope he pulls thru!!:(
