I live in Ohio, and here we have a bunch of native fish that inhabit ponds around the area.

Has anyone ever used some of these native fish for Piranha feeder treats?

I actually fed sunnys to my piranhas as feeders just need to make sure they are not diseased or have any parasites

Exactly but the only decent way of accomplishing that is to quarantine them for a month or more.

Best way is to fillet them, perhaps freeze them for a day or two to kill off existing kudies

Cheap way to decrease nitrates and keep your fish healthy: http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=504763

Feeding whole fish is better then filets. You get all of the nutrition from the organs which makes it a truly balanced diet. Have you ever noticed that a lion eats the guts first? Instinctively they know they need to. (Plus it is easy) That is one reason why pellets are better.

Quarantining is a definite. If I were to do it, I would put it through a low-dose salt quarantine for about 3 weeks.

The reason I was asking, was for the nutritional value for the P. They (sunfish) are pond/lake dwellers so I don't know nutritional levels the fish itself is getting. When I catch them, they look healthy; showing radiant color and very active. But looks can be deceiving.

even if they look great they could still filled with parasites, and best if you dose the tank with parasite med instead of just low-dose salt

Okay yeah, makes more sense. Same time frame? month?

You would need to quarintine for a while before you can do anything with them. Like said above. So you would be better off just collecting a bunch and then putting them in a quarintine and after like a month just slowly putting them in with your p's

I personally wouldn't worry about quarantining wild caught fish from a pond. But that's just me
