I have been seeing several igs lately labeled as blue iguana, blue x cuban hybrid, and I even saw a grand cayman blue ig. Am I mistaken but I thought the grand caymans were highly endangered. I am extremely confused are these just green igs with a high blue coloration or are they hybrids with grand cayman in them or are they true grand caymans? Just wondering this lately so if anyone knows I would be happy to know what they really are.

Logan,

There are no true Grand Cayman Iguanas in captivity, there are a lot of hybrids. Almost as high as 98% blood of Grand Cayman, but this is the only way to transfer these animals within states is if they are crosses/hybrids. There are some true Caymans in California or were a while back, but as stated they are staying Ca. It is a research institute that has them, so I dont see them going to the public. These are ground dwelling iguanids that differ from the Green iguanas you see around.

Thanks V. That is what I was thinking because I know the grand caymans only have like 30 or so in the wild so I was very apprehensive when I saw someone who said they were breeding them for sale. So what are they crossed with cubans? or are there other hybrids too? And the ones you mentioned as 98% do they look mosty like the true grand cayman blues?

There very well could be some pures left in zoological institutions, but I think Logan was referring to captive collections. Even zoo's have alot of hybrids now as well. DNA blood work has confirmed it.

Yes I was reffering to captive collections not to other institutions. I wish I could get my hands on some of the higher percentage blues b/c we have a pure at the zoo by my house and it is one of the best looking animals I have seen. Sadly no girl for it though since it gene pool is a little over represented in the conservation breeding.

To what V as said I will ad that besides cubans there are also hibridis between blues and cayman brack iguanas;) Aparently they even first don it with bracs and then cubans apeared later. This comes from a time when zoos were much less organized then today. As I think the story goes they keeped a inportant zoo populacion of blues with bracs, and before they could do anything about it they started to interbreed and the woule stock was rejected and puted on private hands:naughty: A disaster for the breeding program but a super bonus for the pet keeping hobby, thats because of this mistake that you can keep a almost pure blue today:D And yes there are pure blues in zoos both in europe and in the us. The hibrids belonging to zoos are kept for educasional porpouses. If by some freakish thing the woule great cayman populacion disapears we see the value of this hobby;) They may not be 100% blue but they have most of their genes:D (also teoricly you could make a 100% blue by selective breeding, but without a genetisist is hard:grinno:)
