I was wanting an opinion on how many hermits to put in a 220 reef with about 150 lbs of LR. Also, how many nerite to go with them. I will have about double that amount of LR. Thanks, James

I wouldn't use any hermits only cause they kill of snails and other important organisms as well as nip corals.

Ive always loved my blue legs. Did a great job cleaning the tank, and as far as I could see left everything alone...I did about 15 in my 75...and they werent the main cleaners, but they do a good job getting into nooks and crannies, and often deal better with large clumps of filamentous than snails do. Note...weak animals will be killed/eaten. But I have never seen a healthy snail get killed by the blue legs. Other hermits in my tank maybe...but the blue legs I think are pretty well behaved.

I dont have blue legged hermits.. I have 2 red legged hermits and one unidentified hermit. I have noticed them trying to nip at my zooanthid but outside of that I havent had any problems with them. I have 4 snails and have yet to see them bother my snails (knock on wood).

mine tore my healthy snails apart

I would never buy the red hermits just because of how aggressive they are...they also get too large for a reef setting in my mind. Remember that there are no RULES to reefing...only suggestions. If you can make it work...then it works! :D

I usually put at least 50 crabs and or snails every year to replenish the stock in my 220 reef
-they dont bother anything in my tank sometimes they kill each other and snails but not to bad the main killers are arrow crabs and sally light foots hermits are the best of all cleaners
-if you are setting up a new tank I would go one hundred of each 50 at a time
