Had a customer in stating that his tank was being taken over by an algae type that looked like blue powder. Coated the gravel, decorations and filter pad. Looked like it was also floating in the water. All fish died and algaecide did not control it. Anyone hear of anything like this?

What kind of customer was this? Hell, from what i hear from customers there could be aliens lurking in some of these tanks.

Sorry, i dont have an answer though.

I'll take another shot at it...unless there is some blue powder-eqsue substance that i dont know about. I bet it was an algae bloom where the water was green, tank near a window, and the person leaves the light on 24/7. Then the customer dumps a full bottle of whatever algaecide in, thus killing all the fish. Or the fish died from poor water quality, since algae can thrive off overfeeding, with all the excess nutrients in the water.

Ya, since algae comes in green, blue-green to red and if the customer eye sight is a little off it most probably that is it.

He should have brought some in for you to ID.

Or something degrading in the tank/filter.

Foreign material found it's way into the tank (jealous girlfriend, little kid).

He shouldn't have use algaecide as his method of destroying the algae. Ask for his water parameters if you haven't.

cyanobacteria...google it :)

I went that route with him. He said it is a fine powder, baby blue in color. Has been searching for info and has not found anything like it. Not on glass at all and if gravel is disturbed floats up like a powder. Not slimy or adhering to any objects.

did he use a diatom filter?

the only thing that comes to mind is actually two things - one, he would have had to use some kind of blue/green medication in the tank at some point, like a fungus treatment, and run a diatom filter. the DE in the filter would be dyed by the medication, and then the filter broke down and spewed blue DE all over the tank. definitely would have killed the fish from abrading and clogging their gills.

yeah, im thinking whatever he used to "treat" the tank died the algae blue-- just my guess.. it wouldve been cool to see a pic of it..

sorry im a retard today and cant spell---died:dyed.
