I've begun treating him this morning. I changed 30% of the water and added a med to treat the bloat. Looks like he doesn't have a chance though. Worth trying though. I have to rush home today and change the water again!
I put this "little" guy in a 10 gallon with med and fresh water. How long can a fish live with bloat? What's the best way to treat him? I have a picture of him/her in my gallery.
There are several kinds of "bloat" some of which just go away, some that can be cured with antibiotics or vermifuges, and some that can't be cured. I have only one fish that had any of them a pirate perch, it turned out to have a tumor and died. Wish I could help but since I can't I'll hope you have luck instead.
I think your fish has a few day to live, max. Tropheus are notorious for getting bloat. Feed them spirulina and plant matter, and avoid carnivorous matter (and protein-oriented prepared fish food) at all costs.
Thanks for the info guppy and piranha45.
FYI I never give these guys anything but flake. I gave them zucchini once and the smallest guy got bloat. When I did the second water change I noticed a few rotted pieces under one rock. No doubt in my mind that he ate one of them. I learned a very good lesson, "If it isn't broke, don't try to fix it!". I will try adding salt in his tank today. Anyone know how long he can live with the swelling? I gave him 2 flakes the other day and they are gone. Can I continue to do this? Will it cause more problems? Now I have a good idea how to treat the water conditions. What about feeding a fish with bloat? Any help is much appreciated!
the goods news is he's back to normal and I'm going to put him back in with the rest of the guys sometime tomorrow. the bad news is the second largest guy was beat to death! I changed the water a few times in the large tank to get rid of any infected waste. I also cut back on the feeding cause they weren't eating as much. 3 days later I found him with the tail almost chewed off and a fin more than half gone. I did everything I could to save him. but when i found him in the tank he was pointing up and down which I found out means he was nearly dead all ready. At least I didn't lose 2. But I shouldn't have lost any cnsidering the bloated guy made it.
I also want to thank you guys/gals for all the help you gave me.
