hey all, i was wondering if this is a blue tilapia. please keep in mind that when my fish is in different moods it can have no spots on the main part of the body be completly dark or have vertical or horizontal stripes. also if anyone owns a blue tilapia could they post up pics of their blue tilapia

the difference in the colour of the photos is that one was taken with the aquarium lights off and the flash on and the othere the opposite.

sarathodon mossambicus

The fish is not rare, but it is very rarely found available. That seems to be the case with most Oreochromis / Sarotherodon / Tilapia ssp. Unfortunately so. All are wonderful fish.

But, all you need for breeding is a male and a female, and an eye to keep on them so the female doesn't get killed.

As for being LEGAL is another story.

In Australia they are considered pest fish.
Funny Aussies. Introduce a bug to eat aquatic "weeds' which get out of control, then bring in tilapia to eat the bugs, which got out of control. :grinno:
I don't recall whether or not they were legal to keep but considering they were a feral problem I would expect that to be the reason why you don't see them too often. In shops or aquariums that is. Pretty common on dinner plates. :D
They're pest fish all over the world, most places where they are introduced as food fish and somehow get turned loose and outcompete the local fauna for food and space.
A good male can get 18" long (sometimes bigger). A good female just as long but they usually stay a bit smaller. A male in a big enough tank with other fish similar in size and/or temperament isn't too aggressive but it's not the same story when a female's around. Kinda psycho then lol.

yeh they are ilegal i got it out the damn and at the time i thought it was a luderik and not a tilapia and as its grown (ive had it for 3 months) its already grown twice as big and i like it as it is peacful and funny (it does extremely random things and i like feeding it) and it is very attractive as it is starting to get some really interesting colouration(red tiped fins etc.)
ive only come to realise its a tilapia about 2-3 weeks ago.

They are awesome - just keep quiet about it. And he'll get big. Probably about 16 inches.

:grinyes:sweeeeeeet:grinyes: do they eventually take live foods such as guppies??? cause i wanna see them hunt:D is it one of thoose "anything that fits in my mouth is goin in my gob even if it can't fit out my arse" fish or is it a sensible feeder. i have noticed it is a slightly shy specimen but as it gets bigger does it develop into an aggressive feeder.
