I just collected some juvenile sunfish today of which I determined are bluegill. My questions are: how aggressive do bluegill tend to be(I know individual specimens can vary; don't beat a dead horse.), what's a common size they reach in an aquarium under normal feedings, and what are the best tankmates for them as far as sunfish go?

First off, what size tank do you have? Then after you get the right sized tank is stock. Id say a 125 is good for about 4 bluegill and maybe a couple of bullheads. The bluegills should get about 13" if kept in the right conditions. A 125 with some sand, and a big piece of driftwood with some rock caves should suffice for the natural feel. Bluegill are pretty aggressive so any smaller fish are at risk of being eaten.

I have a 125 being filtered by a fluval 405 and two penguin 350s. I wish I had sand, but unfortunately I have gravel. I have a nice piece of driftwood in there and I'm soaking a new piece of malaysian driftwood to get rid of tannins before adding it as well. I also have my tank planted somewhat. I also have some rock caves. What else could I get besides bluegill? I'd like some variety. Also, bullhead get pretty large don't they?

Ya bullhead get pretty big black and brown bullheads can reach like 18" and yellow bullheads stay the smallest. I might be wrong about this but thats what I thought. You can put a couple shiners, and maybe some more sunfish like redbreast or longear sunfish which look very pretty and have great coloring

Correction- it seems black bullheads are the smallest then yellow and then brown. You could do a single black bullhead, and probably get away with a couple bluegill and maybe a redbreast, longear sunfish or pumkinseed.

Actually Black Bullhead is not smallest bullhead, they can get larger surpass 15" quite regularly. I believe snail, spotted and flat bullheads are smaller species rarely surpass 12" but they have limited range in America unlike blacks, browns and yellows
