Hi Everyone,

I am asking a question about the Wrasse because my fish store just sold me one. I had gone there asking about my Damsels that have just contracted ich and he told me to throw a cleaner wrasse in there to clean up the ich. I was just looking up online and it says they are hard ot keep in captivity. Can anyone give me suggestions on keeping a cleaner wrasse in captivity.

Thank You Harley79

Acclimate slowly if not already done. Be sensitive during water changes and adding anything in there. Dramatic chemical change is hard on these guys. For future*, I would go with a skunk cleaner shrimp. Much hardier in the livestock category and typically cheaper to replace.

the skunk cleaner shrimp would be the best, that cleaner Wrasse is hard to keep........

They can be hard to convince eat prepared food. Live Baby Brine shrimp may entice them to eat, but that as a sole diet will have them slowly starve of nutrition. If you can get them to eat a variety of foods, they can survive long term. Remember that their mouths are very very tiny, so food needs to be small enough.

I have personally seen them eat live brine, Fozen brine, mysis, babykrill, daphnia and Cyclops. Also micro pellets were eaten, but less enthusiastically. It is likely that in the wild these fish would eat enough parasites and micro inverts to sustain them alone. In a tank that just isn't viable.

feeding an housing isues aside

you have a 3" fish cleaning a 2" fish... not likely to happen, least not without seriously pissing off the damsel

my 2 inch cleaner goby wreaks havoc in my tank and my fish are only 5-6" now.. the shrimp would have been a much better option. i suggest returning the wrasse and consoling someone else, other than the guy selling you stuff, for info

unless it's a garabaldi or sergent major, it's still probably going to be too big a cleaner

That guy is an idiot. That's not a good solution

Thank You Everyone for your advice. Whats done is done and I really want to take the best care of him right now. My green chromie is as big as him and I have a 3 stripe damsel that is a little bit smaller than the wrasse. So hopefully I can keep him alive.
