I found a BMW 318 iS coupe for $4995. It's a 1995 with only 60,000 miles on it. The catch is that there is minor rear damage. Needs a rear bumper and quarter panel to be pristine. Also would need to install a stereo, cuz that one sucks. Is this worth it, or is this a money pit?

If it was a 325 id go for it, but the 318s are very sluggish. They're fun as hell to drive though.

I've got an older 318 that I love, but it just lacks power.
They do get decent mileage though.

I noticed that the engine is a 1.8 L

Is that why you say it's sluggish? My car is a 4 cyl 2.4 with dual overhead, and it is good off the line but terrible accelerating from 70 on up.

Honestly, my main concern is reliability, and the 60K on the engine is attractive.

60k on an 11 y/o car is REAL good.Chances are whoever had it before babied it.But anytime you buy a car that old you take a risk. You should call the salvage yards for the bumper and panel to get prices if fixing it will be another investment you want to make. One thing about that car though, BMW parts are expensive if you buy them new.And with a car that old you're almost guaranteed to replace something.

You probably wont be happy with the 1.8s power. They are considerably slower than the quad 4 you have now. Still, they're a blast to drive, and handle like a go-cart.

For future reference, bimmer= car, beemer= bike, and beamer= crappy little scooter things that people ride when they lose their licnese due to a DUI.

Anybody remember that 3-wheeled BMW thing Steve Urkel drove? That's the image I got in my head from Rally talking about the go-cart.

I don't know if it's any different over there, but the BMW parts are so $$$ also BMW mechanics dont have a clue about their own car... one of my business partners sold his 8month old 2006 M3 because it had problem after problem and they could not resolve it.

*shrugs*

The Isetta...the American BMW plant is five minutes away and they've got a museum there. They have on display an Isetta. Some cars look like sharks; some cars look like tanks; the Isetta looks like a testicle.
