Hi everyone, this is my first post but I've already been reading and learning for a few months now!

What is the consensus here on keeping Bolivian rams with a firemouth? I have a 55 gallon tank that has several caves already, and will have more once I transfer my firemouth in (he's coming in last). He's not full grown yet, probably like 6 months old. Anyway, I was hoping to encourage the Rams to have a colony towards one side, and then get the firemouth in on the other side (which has no caves yet). Put some plants in the middle, and some dithers at the top.

If not rams, are there any other commonly available (like Petco/Petsmart), smaller cichlids that would work in the tank? I don't want lethal violence, but I also would like a mix of some sort (unless I can get some rams in there). Thanks!

I have my Bolivian's in with an EBJD and 6 rainbow sharks. I also have one golden ram in the tank as well. it is a 90 gallon. So far the only ones that bother the bolivian's is the golden ram... looking for territory. I don't know anything about firemouths... sorry.

You might get away with it in a 55, but I'd rather go with something more durable like kribensis

Yeah, unfortunately the Petcos and Petsmarts of the northern Boston suburbs refuse to stock Kribs. It's quite frustrating.

firemouths get bigger but are docile enough.

but they're better with smaller like rummynose, danios, kribs

maybe some curviceps would be interesting, since most petsmarts usually carry them
