We just heard a boom in the 55gal turtle tank in the room. So now I have this heater that is split on both sides and shot some mica looking flakes all about my tank. I instantly removed the turts and tossed them in my 180 hoping they dont start hunting my smaller fish. Anybody know what this shiny flaky stuff is? I have read these are problem heaters........

Those heaters were recalled a few months ago...

I had no idea of a recall....until this happened. I read the link you posted wiggles for getting new ones. I wonder if I will need to send all my stealth heaters in or if they will just send replacements.

Best bet is to call United Pet Group (800) 338-4896. They'll send you a shipping label to return the heaters. You can get a visi therm replacement or a refund.

They were recalled because a certain safety hazard which you seemed to experience.
What i would is..
Take all the water out of the tank.
Clean decor, gravel, glass etc ( without soap only water )
Depending on the filter i would buy new media.
Put everything back in.
Buy new heater.
Let it cycle for 2-3 days
you can actually return it to a pet store and get a full refund.

Stealth heaters strike again.

take all your stealths to petsmart and they'll give you store credit. After that use the store credit to buy new ones. Thats what I did with the 6 I had...
