Boomer the amphilophus hogaboomorum

This is to introduce Boomer the Amphilophus Hogaboomorum. He was gifted to me by DMD123 . So far it appears to be working. There has been some aggresion where he pushes on or touches the SD or the cory. One cory does have some nipped fins. He has claimed the area behind the rock. He is not an aggressive feeder and is being out competed for food by the SD. I need to pick up some hikari or other CA cichlid specific food to try as he isn't intrested in what I have tried so far either.

Beautiful hogaboomorum! I love this species, used to have a jumbo male years ago. Very unique look within the amphs. Mine was not very aggressive to anything other than Amphilophus either. And even had no problem with a female chancho. So not too bad.

I would get the cory's out of there aasp! My panamensis ate one not long ago and had to have pliers-surgery to get it out, they have spines in their fins that cause them to get lodged in the fish's throat if they attempt to eat them

Gourami Swami , I am considering moving them out. Will require draining most likely. Do you think he would try to eat the Flagtails?

Just need him to start eating. He did snap one blood worm yesterday before the SD.

Hard to say, I got mine when it was large already and it tolerated other cichlids that didn't look like it. Beat up a lyonsi bad once. I had some big clown barbs too and they weren't killed as I remember. How is he with the SD's?

I would feed frozen bloodworms to the tank of growouts he was in and he didnt show a lot of interest. He was eating a mix of Omega One floating cichlid and NLS float. Was not a heavy feeder, kind of more a 'dainty' eater.

Also, when I got home today there was a 6in circular pit dug one the open side of the tank. Do Hoga dig? I have read flagtail cats are either pit spawners or bubble nesters so could have been them?

As far as eating goes, he maybe just settling still. Should come around in time.

Most cichlids dig pits. It's a way to advertise to the opposite sex that they are available. The Hoga I had also dug out a sizable pit.

The hoga reminded me a lot of a wild caught fish vs tank raised when it came to feeding. It wouldn’t over eat and get bloated looking at all. It seemed to eat just enough to be full. Thats why I called it a “dainty” eater. My other midas and Petsmart devils chow down like its their last meal, typical of many tank born fish. They just dont seem to have a good off button when it comes to feeding so I really try not to over feed.

I think it is just trying to get used to the aggressive feeding of the silver dollars at this point and seeing where it fits in. When I had my silver dollars way back when, I did a mix of pellet sizes with large algae wafers and various sizes of floating and sinking pellets. I could guarantee the silver dollars would greedily go at large algae wafers first so that the other fish could get the floating or smaller sinking pellets. You might try it, it worked well for me.

While I raised him he ate a mix of Omega One cichlid both floating and sinking and NLS float. Just give it some time to settle in.
